Playing almost any instrument for a long time will lead to stiffness and tension through the shoulders and upper back.
One of the best things you can do to recover faster and prevent stiffness from turning into pain is to give these areas a good stretch after playing.
Here’s one of my favorite exercises to do just that.
Tip
You may notice in the video that my right shoulder is quite a bit less flexible than my left.
It’s normal for your dominant shoulder to have less ability to reach behind and up your back. Mine is a little stiffer than I’d like. Right now it doesn’t bother me, but if I don’t take care of it, it gets even tighter, which usually starts to cause shoulder or neck pain.
Once I get back to stretching the area, things get back to normal fairly quickly.
