Feature: Upgrade Your Warm-Up
I recently made a few adjustments to the pre-practice warm-up that I put together a few years back.
The video quality is a little better and I re-worked the end of the warm-up to give the hands a little more love.
I really like the wrist and finger exercises on the wall, but too many musicians had issues with them due to being very tight in those areas. That told me two things…
- Warming up those areas needs to be more gentle, so a change needed to be made.
- Musicians need some developing mobility in those deep wrist muscles in a way that won’t aggravate pain, tingling or disrupt playing (more on that in the coming editions).
The new warm-up is below. Give it a try and I hope it helps you prepare your whole body (including the hands and fingers) to play.
You are warming up your body before you play…right…
If you aren’t and need a little convincing (or if your warmup consists of a bunch of static stretches) here’s my thoughts on why you should and how to do it well.

Recover: A Morning Mobility Routine
I love simple, efficient full body mobility routines. Here is an excellent one from “the Mobility Mamba” Dr. Jacob.
It’s listed as a morning routine, but it would also work great in the evenings to give your body a little love after a long day of playing.
Here’s the routine
- 20 puppy extensions
- 10 thread the needle on each side
- Lazy glute stretch: 30 seconds. 1-3 times per side.
- Lumbar twists: 15 seconds. 1-3 times per day.
- Half kneeling reach-back. 10 per side
Give it a try, your body will thank you!
